Working paper questions: packs, question sets and making them your own

Build the firm's working paper checklist from a ready-made pack, then add, edit, reorder and mark questions as required.

The questions on a working paper belong to the firm, not to Tax Optimiser. You start from a ready-made pack, then add, reword, reorder or remove questions until the checklist matches how the firm works. Every client period of that type then gets the same questions.

Groups, sets and questions

  • A question set group is a complete checklist for one type of accounts, for example micro-entity (FRS 105).
  • A group is made of question sets: Planning, Risk assessment, one for each accounts area, Completion, and a disclosure checklist.
  • Each set holds the questions, answered Yes, No or N/A on the working paper.

Open Firm Settings and choose Working Paper Questions. A new firm has no groups yet.

Create your questions from a pack

Click Create from Pack. Packs are offered for micro-entity (FRS 105) and small company (FRS 102 Section 1A) accounts, each in four sizes:

  • Full working paper pack — planning, risk assessment, every accounts area, completion and the disclosure checklist.
  • Accounts prep + disclosure — the accounts areas and the disclosure checklist, without planning, risk and completion.
  • Disclosure / compliance checklist only.
  • Completion / finalisation only — final review, subsequent events, representations, approval and filing.

Click Use this pack. Tax Optimiser copies the pack into a new group that belongs to your firm and opens it for editing. It is a copy: changing it does not change the pack, and later changes to the pack do not change your copy.

Repeat for each type of accounts the firm prepares. A firm with both micro-entity and small company clients needs a group for each.

Edit the questions

  • Add Question on a set adds a question to it. Tick Required for a question that must always be answered; it is marked with a red asterisk here and on the working paper.
  • The pencil edits a question and the bin removes it.
  • Drag the handle on the left of a question, or of a set, to change the order.
  • Add Question Set adds an empty set, and Remove Set deletes a set with its questions.

Heads up — nothing is kept until you click Save at the top of the group. Leaving with Back discards the changes.

Which group a client gets

Each group has a Statutory Account Type and can be marked Default. A client period uses the default group for its account type. The first group created from a pack for a type becomes its default automatically; use Set as Default in the Actions menu to change it.

A period takes its group the first time its working paper is opened and keeps it. Changing the default later affects periods opened after that, not ones already started. Edits to the questions inside a group do reach every period that uses it.

The short version

Working paper questions: packs, question sets and making them your own — in brief

Working paper questions belong to the firm. Start from a pack under Firm Settings, Working Paper Questions, Create from Pack.

Packs come for FRS 105 and FRS 102 1A in four sizes, from the full pack to a completion checklist. Using one makes an independent copy for the firm.

In the editor, add, reword, remove and drag questions and sets, and tick Required on questions that must be answered. Click Save or the changes are lost.

A client period uses the default group for its statutory account type, fixed the first time its working paper is opened.
